Become a Counselor

We at the San Fernando Valley Counseling Center, cordially invite you to become an integral part of a dedicated nonprofit organization with a 50 year history of providing quality, affordable, low cost mental health counseling to the community.

Our Center reaches the underserved whose psychological needs might not be met in any other way. We are currently a Center of about 40 volunteer counselors and 3 supervisors. An atmosphere of community service makes the Center a very exciting and creative place that can add a new dimension to your life.

We generally conduct two training classes each year which begin in January and July. The training program is available to MFT interns, trainees and volunteers from the community. The program meets BBS training requirements. Before the July class, we will have an Information Day, April 2th, 2022 from 1:30-3:00pm, during which we explain the entire program and give applicants an opportunity to meet us and ask questions.  Please contact us if you are interested in joining a class and have questions or wish to visit.

Training classes will last approximately four months. The training consists of two parts: 1) An experiential portion which (for January and July classes) is held on Tuesday mornings from 10;00 am to 12:00 pm and 2) A two hour lecture which (for January and July classes) is held on Tuesdays, following the first group meeting. Some of these lectures may be scheduled on Saturday mornings.

Since we have very little outside funding and rely on client fees and counselor donations to fund our organization, we do request a monthly, tax deductible donation from our counselors. Interns and trainees seeking hours for licensure make a monthly pledge of $75.00. Volunteer (paraprofessional) counselors make a monthly pledge of $40.00 to $75.00.

Trainees and interns begin seeing clients and start participating in a supervision group four to five weeks into the training. For paraprofessional counselors, this doesn't start until they have completed the full training program. Counselors are required to see at least four clients per week and attend a weekly two hour supervision group. In addition they are required to attend Workshop/Staff meetings. These are held six Saturdays each year from 9:30 am to 11:30am.
